Seasoned Worker Reinvents Himself
Kurt, a 57-year-old with a physical disability, had two decades of work experience, including a stint on the culinary staff of the storied Flamingo Hotel. However, the onset of a disability led him to the need to find a new career.
After being referred by VR Nevada to Goodwill’s Community Based Training (CBT) program, Kurt was eager to gain experience in a retail environment, with a special interest in learning how to operate a cash register.
After just two hours of training, Kurt mastered the cash register and worked independently for the remainder of his assessment. He also thrived on the sales floor, always greeting guests with a smile on his face. Multiple managers and coworkers mentioned to Kurt’s trainer that they were impressed by his positive attitude and his accuracy, as Kurt’s drawers were perfectly balanced each time he counted down at the end of his shift.
Halfway through the assessment, Kurt attended a hiring event at the Goodwill where he was currently training. After talking with the store’s manager, he was invited to meet with her once he had completed CBT. Just one week after completing his assessment, Kurt was hired by Goodwill as a part-time sales associate.”
Goodwill helped Kurt adapt to change.
